Have you ever given much thought to our country's landfills
or how long materials last once they get there? The Great Outdoors is an outdoor
gallery that will give you a closer look at what we can do to reduce trash; what
the layers of a landfill are composed of; and what a Garbologist does.

Environment, Electricity, and Conservation
In this exhibit, many of the activities take place in and on the side of a
life-sized recycling truck. Our 30-foot Energy Tower
exhibit is made from
recycled materials and includes the element of solar power as well as many
energy-related and weather activities. Children can turn a crank and see how hard you have
to work to light a single incandescent light bulb versus a
florescent one.
We All Live Downstream
EdVenture has created a running watershed that demonstrates non-point source
pollution. There are factories, construction sites, and
farms along a river and a lake. What do you
suppose happens to the water as it passes by the factory or the farm? What
collects in the end at the lake? For younger kids, there are plenty of
containers for filling and dumping and all types of outdoor water fun
in the nearby water table.
How long does it take everyday items to break down or decompose?
Banana peel 2-5 weeks
Wax paper cup 5 years
Polystyrene cup 10-20 years
Aluminum can 100-500 years
Glass jar 1,000,000 years
