From the Mountains to the Sea
In My Backyard, children learn through play while you take time to relax, chat with other
parents and read helpful resources. Young children will learn through play as they explore
the beach, forest and mountains without ever stepping outside. My Backyard reflects the
diverse flora, fauna and geography of South Carolina, making this a warm, safe setting
for youngsters to learn.

Exhibits include Camp Piney Woods, where there are plenty of roots surrounding the
live oaks that are perfect for crawling on. Stop by the real campsite, complete with tent
and camping gear. Then head over to Pollywog Pond, which is just for babies who are
learning how to sit up and crawl. It's a soft-sculpted area surrounded by a comfortable
bench for the ever-watchful caregiver. Next, set sail on the Little S.S. Shrimpy, a
kid-sized shrimp boat. Ring the bell and steer her out to sea as you sing your
favorite songs about the water.
Little EdVenturers programming including Mommy & Me and Parenting 101 will take
place in the nearby Early Learning Center. My Backyard is complete with a family
bathroom, stroller parking, gated door and a friendly sign that reads, "Big
Kids Keep Out!"
Today, nearly 1 in 7 South Carolina children test "not ready" for
the first grade. In some communities, that statistic is as poor as 1 in 4, or higher.
